Lusa - Business News - Cabo Verde: Project aims to give 50 disabled women financial autonomy

Praia, Aug. 18, 2026 (Lusa) - A total of 50 women with disabilities in Cabo Verde are to receive training in entrepreneurship and digital skills to promote their financial independence, as part of a project launched in the capital, Praia, on Tuesday.

«It is an entrepreneurship project that will benefit 50 women with disabilities. First, they will receive training in life skills, then in entrepreneurship, and finally in digital skills,» said Rosana Carvalho, coordinator of the «Mudjer sem Limiti» [Women Without Limits] initiative, launched in the city on Tuesday.

The initiative by Cape Verde's Association for the Promotion and Inclusion of Women with Disabilities (Apimud), funded by the African Women's Development Fund (AWDF), aims to create the conditions for participants to develop skills and set up or strengthen their businesses.

The project will distribute the 50 beneficiaries across the municipalities of Praia and Santa Cruz, with 25 women in each location, over a period of 17 months.

The training includes life skills, with a focus on leadership, self-esteem and self-awareness, business skills and digital literacy.

The project also provides ‘start-up kits' to help participants begin their activities, as well as mentoring and psychological support.

Ten places are reserved for women with visual impairments and a further ten for women with hearing impairments, whilst the remaining places are for women with other types of disability.

With a budget of 2.15 million escudos (€19,500), the project also includes community initiatives to promote inclusion and acceptance.

The initiative also plans to hold the first entrepreneurship fair for people with disabilities, where businesses set up by participants will be showcased.

The president of Apimud, Eurídice Andrade, placed the initiative in the context of the persistent barriers to access to education, employment and the labour market for people with disabilities.
