Lisbon has decided to buy three new frigates from Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, Premier Giorgia Meloni told a joint news conference with Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro after meeting him at her office in Rome on Monday.
    "One of the sectors where we can certainly make a qualitative leap forward is the defence industry," Meloni said.
    "I am very pleased with the Portuguese authorities' decision to purchase three Evo-class frigates built by Fincantieri.
    "This is a recognition of the excellence of Italian industry, but it also shows that Europe can strengthen its autonomy by investing in the industrial and technological capabilities of its companies".
