Maputo, July 16, 2026 (Lusa) - The Algerian airline Air Algérie plans to operate regular flights between Algiers and Maputo from January 2027, to facilitate the movement of people and boost trade, the Mozambican Government announced on Thursday.
In a statement, the Ministry of Transport and Logistics noted that the decision follows an agreement signed this week by Minister João Matlombe and Algeria’s ministry of the interior, local authorities and transport, Saïd Sayoud, providing for the establishment of air links to facilitate the movement of people, boost trade and bring the two countries’ markets closer together.
“With this agreement, Mozambique and Algeria have given new impetus to bilateral cooperation through the signing of the Air Services Agreement, an instrument that paves the way for strengthening connectivity between the two countries, developing transport infrastructure and creating new opportunities for cooperation in the aviation, logistics and transport sectors,” the document states.
For the Mozambican Government, strengthening air connectivity and transport infrastructure is a strategic means of bringing economies closer together, encouraging private investment, facilitating trade and contributing to the achievement of the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
The two ministers also agreed to move forward with specific cooperation measures to carry out studies aimed at developing the Nacala rail corridor, considered a strategic piece of infrastructure that is expected to strengthen regional links between the Port of Nacala, in northern Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The third agreement signed by the two governments provides for the training of Mozambican staff in Algeria, including training in port management, training of trainers for the Mozambican Civil Aviation Academy, training for staff of the Maritime Authority, and skills development in the logistics sector.
The minister for Transport and Logistics, quoted in the statement, emphasised that Mozambique remains committed to deepening cooperation with African countries through partnerships that promote economic growth, regional and continental integration, and the creation of opportunities for sustainable development for the peoples of both states.
In September 2025, the Mozambican Head of State, Daniel Chapo, visited Algeria and called for the establishment of direct air links between African countries, to reduce dependence on other continents and make tourism, trade and logistics on the continent more flexible.
Chapo also invited Algerian businesspeople to invest in Mozambique, including in gas refining, noting that the country is becoming one of the “major producers” of this resource in Africa and worldwide.
