Maputo, July 10, 2026 (Lusa) - The head of the company behind a new portal designed to facilitate access to job vacancies in Mozambique said on Friday that the initiative aims to eliminate nepotism in recruitment, following the signed agreement with the government to set up the portal.
The memorandum of understanding, signed today in Maputo, involves the consultancy firm Matos International Business, the National Employment Institute (INEP) and the company Webmasters Kenya, and the aim is to create a digital platform called “Portal Emprego” (employment portal), as part of a technological and strategic partnership.
According to the director of Matos International Business, Sérgio Matos, the portal will publicise job opportunities for young Mozambicans, enabling contact between employers and job applicants via a profile-filtering mechanism that allows direct communication between the parties, without human interference, thereby eliminating nepotism.
“It will do away with nepotism – with saying ‘no’ just because someone is a cousin and it has to be them. No. The portal will decide for itself; it will say ‘no’ – these are the people qualified for the job, and there’s no way to fudge it,” said Sérgio Matos.
Matos also explained that the platform was designed to connect employers, in response to the ongoing digitalisation process in Mozambique and the need for a “rapid response” from the government to the issue of youth employment.
“We know that many people have to keep printing CVs, have to rush about, go door to door, and travel from place to place. With this platform, there’s no longer any need to do that,” he said.
According to the same source, the portal includes a support feature for job applicants, helping them prepare for an interview if necessary.
“There’s something very interesting: if you’re lying on the platform itself – [for example], claiming you’re a bricklayer when you’re not (…) – it starts to realise that the answers you’re giving have nothing to do with you and immediately cancels your application,” added Sérgio Matos.
A statement issued by the Ministry of Youth and Sport notes that Minister Caifadine Manasse, who witnessed the event, regarded the agreement as part of the government’s “broader” effort to bring the state closer to its citizens and to ensure that young people “find, in their own country, reasons to believe in the future”.
“This is a profoundly political act in the best sense of the term: putting the machinery of the state at the service of those who need it most – young people – restoring their confidence, dignity and prospects in life through work,” says the ministry.
Through this portal, the minister aims to ensure that promoting employability, and the registration and referral of young jobseekers to employment opportunities, work placements, vocational training, self-employment and entrepreneurship, are carried out more quickly, flexibly and accessibly.
“With just a mobile phone, a young person from anywhere in the country – from the most remote rural areas to the major cities – will now be able to find vacancies and opportunities that previously were only available to those living near major urban centres. For me, this is a concrete way of tackling inequalities and bringing opportunities to every corner of Mozambique,” said Manasse, as quoted in the statement.
The minister expressed his support for the launch of the “Employment Portal” and called for more partnerships to ensure a “high-quality, modern and accessible” public employment service.
