Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Train operator changes schedules in response to extreme temperatures

Lisbon, July 4, 2026 (Lusa) - Train operator CP – Comboios de Portugal has adjusted its schedule this weekend, cancelling six Intercidades services as part of the exceptional measures adopted due to the ongoing heatwave affecting the country and the red alert in force until Sunday.

The affected services are the IC 513, which runs between Lisbon Santa Apolónia and Guarda; the IC 512, which connects Guarda to Lisbon Santa Apolónia; the IC 523, which runs between Lisbon Santa Apolónia and Porto Campanhã; the IC 524 between Porto Campanhã and Lisbon Santa Apolónia, the IC 572 departing from Lisbon Oriente bound for Faro, and the IC 672 running the reverse route between Faro and Lisbon Oriente, the operator stated today in a press release.

According to the company, it made this decision at a time when meteorologists still forecast exceptionally high temperatures across much of mainland Portugal, with a view to “mitigating the impact of the heatwave on passengers”.

Over the weekend, CP will continue to provide technical support for the most critical services and monitor air-conditioning systems.

In addition, it will manage passenger numbers on some long-distance trains by suspending ticket sales for services and times when temperatures are at their highest, and will provide customers with more information, the operator added.

The same trains will be cancelled on Sunday, although the IC 516 (Guarda/Lisbon Santa Apolónia) will follow a different stopping pattern from Saturday.

CP also states that passengers affected by the cancellations may request a ticket exchange or refund at no additional cost.
