Coimbra, Portugal, June 5, 2026 (Lusa) - Nearly €24 million in compensation for damage to homes caused by Storm Kristin and other storms over the last winter in Portugal has already been paid out in the central region, the Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR) announced on Friday.
In an update provided today, the CCDR stated that 6,237 claims have been settled, totalling €23.7 million.
In total, 25,728 claims were submitted in the central region of the country, of which 9,240 (35.9%) have already been resolved. There are still 14,168 under review in 73 districts and 2,320 at the CCDR.
The president of the CCDR Centro, José Ribau Esteves, highlighted the “commitment of the institutional team, which has been delivering high-quality responses within a short timeframe, given the volume of cases and the complexity of the task”.
Comparing this with the handling of disaster damage in previous years, Ribau Esteves highlighted the "shorter time frame between the date the damage occurred (the epicentre on January 28), the government making funds available for payments, the application submission period (until April 7) and the responses with decisions and payments to beneficiaries".
According to the CCDR, of the 73 local councils that submitted applications, there are eight where all have already been decided and ten where more than 90% are in this situation.
There are 24 councils where less than 25% of applications have been decided.
Leiria submitted the most applications, a total of 10,808, of which 3,721 (34.4%) have been decided. It is followed by Marinha Grande (3,365 submitted and 243 decided), Pombal (2,482 submitted and 1,318 decided), Sertã (972 submitted and 373 decided), Ansião (878 submitted and 475 decided) and Coimbra (647 submitted and 110 decided).
These six councils submitted 19,152 applications, accounting for 74.4% of the total 25,729 in the centre region. Of the 9,240 applications decided, 6,240 (67.5%) are from these councils.
“We are entering June 2026, the month agreed upon by the managing bodies as the final one to complete this important task; it is therefore appropriate to provide a public update on the current situation, presenting data covering the period up to and including May 31,” explained Ribau Esteves.
The CCDR has promised to provide a further update with data from June 10, 2026 and June 20, 2026.
