Lisbon, May 29, 2026 (Lusa) - Carris, the public transport operator in Portugal’s capital, confirmed to Lusa on Friday that authorities are searching its headquarters in Santo Amaro, Lisbon, and stated the company is cooperating with them.

“Carris is cooperating with the authorities, as always, and confirms that searches are taking place at the company's headquarters in Santo Amaro,” the company said in a brief response.

The company declined to provide further details after reporters asked about the purpose of the criminal investigation police (the PJ) searches.

CNN Portugal reported on Friday morning that the PJ is conducting a search operation related to the Gloria funicular tragedy, which derailed in September 2025, killing 16 people.

The television channel reported that authorities are investigating crimes of negligent homicide and breach of safety rules.

The investigation targets officials from Carris and MAIN, the company holding the subcontract to maintain the funicular.

The report added that the evidence-gathering operation involves more than 20 PJ inspectors, and prosecutor Joaquim Morgado is directly supervising the field operation.

Morgado leads the criminal case at Lisbon's Department of Investigation and Criminal Action.

CNN Portugal reported that investigators are also searching the homes of those targeted.

The Railway Accident Investigation Department (GPIAAF) cooperated with the probe, and its preliminary findings led to the dismissal of Carris' maintenance director, who directly oversaw the infrastructure.

Authorities also identified the manager of the maintenance contract with MNTC - Serviços Técnicos de Engenharia.

Managing partner Gustavo Pita Soares is the main figure representing the firm.

Lusa attempted to obtain a comment from the Attorney General's Office, which heads the Public Prosecutor's Office coordinating the Gloria funicular accident investigation, and is awaiting a response.
