Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Lisbon airport border capacity reinforced – interior ministry

Lisbon, May 29, 2026 (Lusa) – Starting on Friday, Lisbon airport will have an additional 48 Public Security Police officers, and more “boxes” and “e-gates”, according to the interior ministry.

To speed up border controls, Lisbon airport will now have 34 "boxes" and 31 "e-gates" in the arrivals hall, 14 more than the current number, and 18 in the departures hall, four more.

“Following the completion of these expansion and installation works at Lisbon airport, it is also planned, during June and July, to boost border control capacity at Porto and Faro airports by increasing the number of ‘boxes’ and installing new ‘e-gates’,” the interior ministry said.

Portugal began implementing the European Union Entry/Exit System (EES), which replaced traditional passport stamps with digital records, and the European Travel Information and Authorisation System, ETIAS, on 12 October 2025, but on 11 and 12 April 2026, the collection of biometric data on departures from Lisbon, Porto and Faro airports was suspended due to longer-than-desired waiting times for passengers to board.
