Luanda, May 28, 2026 (Lusa) – Angola’s police arrested over 200 people during an operation in Bengo province, where a mine collapse killed 28 ‘garimpeiros’ (illegal gold miners).
The incident occurred on 23 May, following the collapse of an illegal artisanal gold mine in Bengo province.
The interior ministry spokesperson said, "Operação Fio de Ouro 2" (Operation Gold Thread 2) led to the arrest of 209 people.
The group included 40 foreigners, mostly citizens from the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo, with an illegal immigration status.
Chief Superintendent Gaspar Inacio said that authorities had dismantled several areas and seized various pieces of equipment used to support the illegal extraction and exploitation of gold, a strategic mineral.
The police seized three vehicles, seven motorbikes, 18 motor pumps, 35 shovels and one homemade shotgun.
