Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Border control delays at Lisbon, Faro airports on Sunday – police

Lisbon, May 17, 2026 (Lusa) - Border control at Lisbon and Faro airports in Portugal recorded waiting times "above desirable levels" on Sunday morning, but which are now "within reference parameters", the Public Security Police (PSP) said.

The source told Lusa that technical issues with the computers and high air traffic volumes on Sunday caused the delays at the two airports.

"Waiting times are now within reference parameters," the PSP said.

It added that, with support from airport authority ANA, they are "making every effort" to keep waiting times as short as possible, without neglecting the security and resilience of the border and the Schengen Area.

This marked the second day in a row that border control at Lisbon airport recorded delays due to computer technical difficulties, with waiting times exceeding an hour on Saturday.

Following reports of long queues, an ANA official told Lusa on Saturday that the authority had confirmed waiting times of over an hour at border control in the departures area at Lisbon airport.

The constraints at Lisbon airport's border control led the government to temporarily suspend the European Union Entry/Exit System (EES) for non-EU citizens in 2025.

The system has been operating again since the beginning of 2026.

The EU implemented the EES in phases and expected the system to become 100% operational across the bloc by April.
