Madrid, April 21, 2026 (Lusa) – EDP (Portuguese electric utilities company) remains committed to the US and is liaising with the US government to find a solution for its three suspended offshore wind projects, the company’s CEO saiduon Tuesday.
"Our strategy in the US is very clear, we invest in renewable technologies. It is our largest and fastest-growing market, mainly in solar and batteries," Miguel Stilwell d'Andrade told journalists on Tuesday in Madrid, adding that the company still sees opportunities for onshore wind.
Regarding offshore wind projects, Stilwell d'Andrade said that the US government, led by Donald Trump since January 2025, has clearly rejected such investments.
"But regarding the rest, we continue to see high demand [in the US], at levels never seen before," said the EDP CEO during the launch of the annual Wind Europe association event, which promotes wind energy in the European Union.
EDP announced the suspension of three offshore wind projects in the US last week. "They are halted, hibernated, and we are talking to the [US] Administration to see what the solution is for them," he said, declining to provide further details.
The CEO insisted that the current US Government's "very clear policy" against offshore wind remains a "very particular case". In contrast, he highlighted that offshore wind in Europe has developed significantly over the past few years. "We are part of that, and we still see a long way ahead," he said.
Stilwell d'Andrade said that wind power must remain a European priority through mechanisms that do not solely incentivise solar energy, as wind provides an energy source available at all hours of the day and throughout the year, he said.
