Lisbon, April 21, 2026 (Lusa) - Portugal's president, Antonio Jose Seguro, met the head of the Macau government (Macau Special Administrative Region), Sam Hou Fai, on Tuesday to "strengthen the relationship" with China and Macau, the presidency announced.

"This meeting served to strengthen the relationship of trust and deepen the relationship with China and Macau," the note on the president's website said.

President Seguro praised the respect for Macau's identity and acknowledged the territory's role in promoting local culture and heritage.

He also mentioned the importance of the Portuguese School of Macau and the promotion of the Portuguese language as one of the country’s official languages.

The note said the president considered it "essential that it continues to be in full compliance with the legal framework resulting from the transfer of Macau's administration, ensuring harmony with Macau's legal provisions, particularly regarding the respect and protection of rights, freedoms and guarantees."

The Macau leader has been in Portugal on an official visit since Saturday and met Prime Minister Luís Montenegro and several other ministers.
