Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: €38.5M lost to corruption in 2025

Maputo, Feb. 24, 2026 (Lusa) - Mozambique lost at least 2.9 billion meticais (€38.5 million) to corruption in 2025, with the authorities recovering more than 11.8 million meticais (€157,000), it was announced on Tuesday.

"As a result of corrupt practices, we must highlight that the state suffered losses of 2,905,196,924.23 meticais. As a result of corrupt practices, the state seized around 11,869,333.28 meticais," said Romualdo Johnam, spokesperson for the Central Office for Combating Corruption (GCCC), at a press conference in Maputo today.

According to the official, in the same year, Anti-Corruption Offices and Prosecutors' Offices processed 2,169 cases in this area nationwide, an increase of 169 cases from 2024.

"Of the total number of cases processed, 1,275 were concluded, compared to 1,202 in the same period last year. Of the 1,275 concluded cases, 812 resulted in indictments, and 433 resulted in the dismissal of the investigation," he explained.

Among the most frequent crimes in 2025 in this category are passive corruption for illegal acts (550), active corruption (200), embezzlement (179), abuse of office or function (169) and simulation of competences (131).

According to Romualdo Johnam, the procedural activity results from the ex officio intervention of the Public Prosecutor's Office, the receipt of complaints, and the coordination and collaboration of various public and private institutions in the presentation of relevant information.

"With regard to complaints, we urge that they be made responsibly and based on concrete facts. It is essential that they contain a clear description of the facts, the date, place and time they were committed, the possible identification of the offenders and victims, as well as possible evidence, such as witnesses who can testify," he reiterated, noting that complaints without these details could compromise the investigation and the pursuit of justice.

On 15 December, the Central Office for Asset Recovery (GCRA) announced that Mozambique had recovered assets valued at more than 27 billion meticais (€362 million) since 2020, warning of "persistent challenges" in the fight against economic crime.
