Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Flooding situation calm in Coimbra overnight - civil protection

Lisbon, Feb. 12, 2026 (Lusa) - The situation in the Portuguese city of Coimbra remained stable at 7:00 a.m. on Thursday morning, with no significant incidents reported, following Wednesday's breach of the dyke on the right bank of the Mondego River and the collapse of a section of the northern motorway.

"It was a quiet night. The situation is stable and there was no need to evacuate more people during the night," a source from the Coimbra Region Sub-Regional Civil Protection agency told Lusa.

Motorway 1 (A1) was closed in the late afternoon on Wednesday between the Coimbra Norte and Coimbra Sul junctions in both directions due to the bursting of the dyke in Casais, which contributed to the collapse of a section of the road.

The breach of the dyke increased the risk of flooding in that region.

A source from the Brisa motorway concessionaire indicated that the collapse occurred on the slab over the embankment that provides access to the viaduct in that area.

The river basins are under high pressure due to the consecutive storms that have affected Portugal, particularly the rivers Vouga, Mondego, Tagus and Sado.

Sixteen people have died in Portugal as a result of the Kristin, Leonardo and Marta storms, which also left many hundreds injured and homeless.

The total or partial destruction of homes, businesses and equipment, the fall of trees and structures, the closure of roads, schools and transport services, and the cutting off of power, water and communications, floods and extreme rainfall are the main material consequences of the storms.

The Central, Lisbon and Tagus Valley and Alentejo regions are the most affected.

The Government has extended the state of emergency until Sunday for 68 districts and announced support measures worth up to €2.5 billion.
