Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Storm destroys one of the country's largest flower producers

Figueiró dos Vinhos, Portugal, Feb. 5, 2026 (Lusa) - One of the largest flower production units in the country, in the municipality of Figueiró dos Vinhos, in the district of Leiria, was completely destroyed by bad weather, said Mayor Carlos Lopes on Thursday.

"I am visiting a flower production unit. It has one and a half hectares of greenhouses that have been completely destroyed," he lamented.

Speaking to the Lusa news agency, the mayor of Figueiró dos Vinhos pointed out that this is one of the largest farms in the country in this area - located in Braçais, in the parish of Arega - and that "everything has been destroyed".

"There are probably tens of thousands of euros worth of damage here," he added.

Eleven people have died in Portugal since last week as a result of the Kristin and Leonardo storms, which also left many hundreds injured and homeless.

The total or partial destruction of homes, businesses and equipment, the fall of trees and structures, the closure of roads, schools and transport services, and the cutting of power, water and communications are the main material consequences of the storm.

The Central, Lisbon and Tagus Valley, and Alentejo regions are the most affected.

The government has declared a state of emergency for 68 municipalities until Sunday and announced a package of support measures worth up to €2.5 billion.
