Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Police raid Uber office, €28M tax evasion suspicion

Lisbon,April.16,2024(Lusa)-The authorities suspect that the state has been harmed to the tune of €28 million in VAT,due to illegalities committed by Uber home meal delivery companies, which are the cause of the raids on the company's premises.
Uber's premises in Lisbon are being searched on Tuesday, and the electronic platform said in a note sent to Lusa that "it is not the entity targeted by the searches".
In a statement released by the Social Security Institute, the organisation said that a team that also includes the Tax and Customs Authority (AT) and other bodies had launched an operation today aimed at "pursuing criminal tax offences in the sector of home meal delivery companies", estimating that to date this scheme has resulted in the subtraction of €28 million in VAT.
To this amount, he adds, must be added the amount corresponding to social security contributions, which has not yet been calculated.
In the operation, called "Express Delivery", 65 search warrants are being carried out, of which 31 are house searches, 14 are non-house searches and 20 are vehicle searches.
The facts under investigation "include several companies related to the provision of services, through a digital home meal delivery platform, and their accounting offices", the statement said, adding that they relate to the years 2020 to 2024 and are related to "the suspected creation of a fraudulent scheme, supported by a false invoicing circuit".
The aim of this scheme is the "misappropriation of large amounts of VAT", as well as the non-payment of contributions by concealing the workers who carry out the delivery services from Social Security".
The authorities are therefore suspected of committing acts that could constitute criminal offences of qualified fraud and fraud against Social Security.
The searches are being led by the Central Department of Investigation and Criminal Action (DCIAP), which is participating in the operation with the presence of four public prosecutors, and include a mixed team from the ISS Inspection Department (DF), the AT Tax and Customs Inspection and the Fraud Investigation and Special Actions Services Directorate (DSIFAE), with operational support from the GNR Tax Action Unit.
"Express Delivery" is taking place in the districts of Lisbon, Setúbal, Coimbra, Aveiro and Braga, with the searches being carried out by 39 inspectors from the Social Security Institute, around 80 tax and customs inspectors and 55 soldiers from the GNR's Tax Action Unit.
The news of this operation was reported by CNN Portugal, which said that access to the floor where the company's servers are located has been closed off to employees.
