Lusa - Business News - Portugal: PM challenges Socialists, Chega to say if they want to make an 'alternative government'

Curia,Portugal,April 28,2024(Lusa)-The president of the PSD and prime minister on Sundaychallenged the leaders of the PS and Chega to say whether they want to make ‘an alternative government’ and ‘legislate together’, considering that this has to be done ‘eye to eye’ with the Portuguese.
At the closing session of the Europa University, Luís Montenegro referred to last week's general approval of the PS, BE and PCP proposals on personal income tax, with the government's proposal ending up on the specialised list without a vote, along with those of Chega and IL, at a time when their approval seemed to be in doubt.
‘If what appears to be a sign from the first week happens, and the idea of the PS and Chega is to simulate opposition to the government by making an alternative government, then they will have to take that on in the eyes of the Portuguese,’ he challenged.
Montenegro considered that the next campaign would be an opportunity to make this clarification.
‘In the last campaign I was asked to say what alliance policy I had for Portugal and I complied, I never heard the leaders of the PS and Chega say that they were going to legislate together in parliament, take advantage of this campaign to make that clear,’ he said.
Montenegro said that the opposition can present its proposals or even recommend changes to the government's legislation, but that it has ‘a responsibility not to block or tamper with’ the government's legislation.
‘The PS was against our proposal, now it has copied it, adding to it. But it seems that the PS and Chega want to approve a different reduction in personal income tax in parliament than the government. Well, that's governing, that's replacing the government. If the PS and Chega want to govern instead of the government, then they have to get together for real, and that's what they have to tell the country,’ he said.
The PSD president said he wanted to centre the campaign on the choice of the next European Parliament - even recommending that voters not vote for ‘specific causes’ - but warned that AD would not be ‘indifferent to reality’.
‘This is not a rematch of the legislative elections, but an opportunity for all of us to show our coherence and what we really want for the country,’ he said.
At the presentation of the AD candidates for the European elections on 9 June, Montenegro let off steam about his first weeks in office, which he planned for the next campaign.
‘We're going into this campaign doing what we're doing in government: it's remarkable. I'm really enjoying governing, and I'm really enjoying the reaction to our government. The big criticism of the prime minister and the new government is that we delivered what we promised,’ he ironised.
Montenegro argued that, of the parties with the greatest representation, the AD coalition will be the only one ‘that won't have problems with coherence’ in the European campaign, further criticizing PS and Chega.
‘We'll be able to say in this campaign what we said in the last one and in Europe what we say in Portugal. The PS will find it very difficult to say why in Portugal it accepts having a vision of government and sharing government with parties that don't trust the European Union and NATO,’ he said.
Chega, too, he said, ‘will have to explain why it is walking arm in arm in Europe with French, Italian and German parties that defend Putin's Russian regime’.
The president of the PSD once again justified the choice of Sebastião Bugalho as the head of the AD list - for his ‘youth, boldness and merit’ - and with an indirect remark to the head of the PS list.
‘We're being consistent. Once again, we didn't pick up a member of the government that we sacked back in the day,’ he said, in reference to Marta Temido, who resigned from the executive led by António Costa in August 2022.
In the same vein, the president of the CDS-PP, Nuno Melo, also praised Sebastião Bugalho as ‘one of the most talented young people in the media and political firmament’.
‘Since he agreed to head the AD list, he has been one of the most attacked. That's the best sign of all. These attacks happen because Sebastião Bugalho is feared,’ said Melo, in an apparent pun on the PS candidate's name that provoked some laughter from the audience.
Present at the presentation were most of the AD candidates and alternates, ministers Paulo Rangel and Pedro Duarte, PSD secretary-general Hugo Soares and MPs and leaders from both parties.
