Lusa - Business News - Sao Tome: World Bank to finance $6-8M project to transform, upgrade tourism

São Tomé,April.16,2024(Lusa)- The World Bank will finance a five-year project in Sao Tome and Principe to transform tourism with almost €8 million, including training, infrastructure upgrades and cleaning, the archipelago's government has announced.
The announcement was made by São Tomé and Príncipe's minister of the economy at a meeting on Monday with various tourism operators in the archipelago.
"It's a project worth between US$6 million and US$8 million [€5.6 million to €7.5 million], with a duration of five years, and it will start in July to upgrade tourist attractions, promote São Tomé and Príncipe as a tourist destination, train technicians and provide training in French and English," said Disney Ramos in a statement to the press.
According to the minister of the economy, the funding comes under the Waca Mais project, financed by the World Bank, and will also involve the district councils, including other initiatives, namely to guarantee security, hygiene and cleanliness, health, the collection of street dogs and the mentally ill, especially in the country's capital.
"The whole tourism sector will be affected, it will change for the better," assured the minister of the economy.
Disney Ramos said that the government believes that "tourism is the sector that will leverage the economy" in São Tomé, which is why "when making strategic decisions" it met with the private sector to "dispassionately discuss" the sector that "has been growing in terms of tourist numbers", but which it also wants to "grow in terms of quality of services".
"Tourists pay a high price for their tickets, so they come to São Tomé and Príncipe with hotels/guest houses that are also a bit pricey, but they need to feel that the services provided have met their expectations and are worth the effort," said Disney Ramos.
During the meeting, the tour operators presented several concerns, namely the reinforcement of policing to stop "robberies of tourists on the beach" and better control of the market to combat "unfair competition".
"Tourism in São Tomé is not mass tourism, it's quality tourism. Tourists already pay a lot to come and when they get here they want to see new things, they want to have night-time activities, which don't exist [...] we also have beaches where the sand is disappearing more and more, tourists are complaining that they only have stones," said Fátima Vila Nova, head of one of the travel agencies.
The minister of the economy assured that a commission will be set up led by the ministry and the directorates under its tutelage, involving private sector tour operators, to "work to improve the sector".
To tackle unfair competition, Disney Ramos promised to put "a team effectively on the ground" to combat unofficial activity in the sector.
"We want to protect those who invest and those who are legalised, who pay their taxes, pay their fees and we're going to work to minimise or end this," assured the minister of the economy.
Last year, São Tomé and Príncipe surpassed the record of 35,000 tourists by registering 35,817 visitors, with the Portuguese leading the way with almost 50% of visitors, according to data revealed to Lusa by the Directorate of Tourism and Hospitality.
