Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Country's oil, gas reserves stand at 90% - minister

Brussels,April.15,2024(Lusa)-The Portuguese government acknowledged on Monday that there is"a lot of concern" in the European Union(EU) about the energy impact of tensions in the MiddleEast, while guaranteeing that Portugal has gas and oil reserves at a level of 90 %, capable of supplying the country with energy "for weeks".
"There's concern here about what's going on in the Middle East and how that might have an effect on energy prices. We are very concerned. However, in the case of Portugal, our reserves are fine and practically full - both gas and oil - but they are finite and running out," declared the minister for the environment and energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho.
Specifically, "we have practically 90% reserves" of gas and oil, which "are for a few weeks", she said, speaking to the Portuguese press in Brussels on her 'debut' as minister in the European context, at the informal meeting of EU energy ministers.
She said she hoped there wouldn't be a crisis situation, particularly due to the new EU legislation for the energy sector: "Let's hope it doesn't happen, but we're better prepared."
At the moment, according to Maria da Graça Carvalho, no additional measures are being considered, not least because "in the last few days there has been a slight drop in the price of a barrel of oil", but it will be "necessary to be attentive and monitor".
"I hope that, now that we're very close to having good news that reflects the lower prices of renewables [in Portugal], there won't be any instability in the international situation to counteract this, for which there has been so much investment in the past," said the Portuguese minister.
With regard to gas, there are fears that a more generalised conflict in the Middle East could jeopardise the flow of liquefied natural gas, and such concerns could lead to market instability.
The same fears apply to oil, where a crisis in the region could reduce production in Iran and Saudi Arabia, two of the main producing countries.
Iran launched an attack on Israel on Saturday night and early Sunday morning, using more than 200 drones (unmanned devices), cruise and ballistic missiles, the vast majority of which were intercepted, according to the Israeli army.
Today it was revealed that the EU's dependence on crude oil and petroleum products increased to a new high of 97.7 % in 2022, after falling to 91.6 % in 2021, according to Eurostat data.
At the end of last December, the EU reached an agreement to reform the EU electricity market in order to boost the deployment of renewable energies and promote stable and affordable prices for consumers.
This is a market adjustment designed at the peak of the energy price crisis of 2021 and 2022, which aims to bring the EU closer to climate goals and move the 27 away from Russia's fossil fuels.
The pact includes several measures to strengthen consumer protection and establishes criteria that would allow the Council, on a proposal from the Commission, to declare an energy crisis.
"We have a new design for the electricity market, which hasn't come into force yet but will very soon, [...] which provides for a crisis system if there are abrupt increases [in energy prices]," Maria da Graça Carvalho told the Portuguese press in Brussels.
