Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: Too many elephants raises possibility of contraception - interview

Maputo,April.15,2024(Lusa) — The elephants in Maputo National Park, which were in decline only a few years ago, have fully recovered to an estimated 500 animals. This has caused conflicts with the population and put the introduction of contraception on the table.
"The excess could become a problem. We're going to make this assessment of the elephants (...), and we're already starting to see a big impact on the vegetation, which will consequently impact the different populations, including the elephant," Miguel Gonçalves, the administrator of Maputo National Park, around 70 kilometres south of the Mozambican capital, explained in an interview with Lusa.
Officially, the population census carried out regularly puts the number of elephants in the park at 400, but the technical team estimates that there are just over 500 in reality, which will lead to a review of the counting methods and the definition in the coming months, of a plan for the species in Maputo National Park.
"This assessment will then lead to us having a concrete plan for elephant management. It could include things like contraception, for example, to reduce the birth rate so that growth isn't as great as it is now, and translocation, if possible, to other areas, among other measures," he explained, pointing to the conclusion of the definition of this plan within three months. "We have a concept; we just want more concrete figures. We're already on the ground to see if contraception is a possibility. But we want to have concrete figures to know exactly what investment we have to make and what funding we have to get because these aren't cheap operations, and we need to know exactly what we're dealing with," he said.
The presence of elephants in that area is historic, which led to the creation of a hunting reserve in 1932. Previously, the elephants in the area were hunted for their ivory, which, according to history, was then sent to Europe, especially England, from Ilha dos Portugueses, off the coast of Maputo, which came to be called Ilha dos Elefantes (Elephant Island).
"In 1960, it was believed that it was a subspecies of elephant, that it was a coastal elephant, and so the Maputo Elephant Reserve was created to protect elephants, not only because they believed it could be a subspecies at the time but also because of the decline in the elephant population due to hunting," recalled Miguel Gonçalves.
During the 16 years of civil war following Mozambique's independence, the number of elephants in the area declined to such an extent that it is estimated that they numbered "less than a hundred".
"But with the protection we've put in place and the enforcement effort, the elephant population has grown naturally, to the point that by 2022/2023 we've translocated more than 40 elephants. We're in a position to succeed now and be able to donate to other conservation areas," he emphasised.
"Aerial counting doesn't seem to be effective at the moment. We have a lot of forest, and with the noise of the helicopters, the elephants end up hiding. We have another problem because the numbers are increasing, and they are starting to leave the park for the areas where the communities live, which causes conflict. And that's also why we're not just having an excess of elephants. We're having an excess of other species," he added.
Faced with this growth, the local community has been granted an area of almost 10,000 hectares for "community conservation along the boundaries" of the park so that "they can benefit from these excesses" of animals.
Transferring elephants to other parks or conservation areas is also on the table "whenever requested".
"And we're even willing to look at possibly more conservation areas here around us, private or communal, ideally communal so that this excess can be moved there. Consequently, it's a gain in terms of protection," he said.
