Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Flag carrier TAP makes record profit of €177.3M in 2023

Lisbon, March.27,2024(Lusa)- TAP achieved its highest-ever net profit last year, with a profit of €177.3 million, while revenues exceeded €4 billion for the first time, the company announced on Wednesday.
In a statement released today, the Portuguese airline said that the profit had more than doubled compared to the previous year, when the net result was €65.3 million.
Quoted in the statement, the chief executive, Luís Rodrigues, said that "the good results for 2023 confirm TAP's path to recovery in recent years".
However, the company's profits could have been higher if the last quarter of the year had not returned to a loss, with a negative result of €26.2 million, which ended up penalising the company's accounts, which in September showed a net result of more than €203 million.
Operating revenues in 2023 were also the highest ever in the Group's history, reaching €4.2 billion, an increase of €730 million (+20.9%) compared to 2022.
In 2023, TAP recorded a Recurring EBITDA (net profit plus interest paid, taxes, depreciation and amortisation) of €871.6 million, with a margin of 21%.
The Portuguese airline ended the year with a "strong liquidity position" of €789.4 million, "reinforcing the deleveraging path with an improvement in the Net Financial Debt / EBITDA ratio as of 31 December 2023", the note said.
The company also said that this year "the strategy to transform TAP into a structurally sustainable airline will continue to be implemented", improving operations and "strengthening the focus on key markets" and "managing pressure on costs".
In the statement, TAP's CEO emphasised "the increase in punctuality and regularity in the second half of the year, as well as the NPS (which measures the customer satisfaction index)".
He also believes that 2024 will be "a challenging year, which will test the organisation's focus".
Last year TAP carried 15.9 million passengers, representing an increase of 15.2% compared to 2022 and reaching 93% of the figures achieved in 2019 (pre-pandemic).
The total number of flights operated also increased by 11.0% last year, reaching 88% of pre-crisis levels.
Capacity also exceeded 2019 levels, reaching 101%, representing an increase of 14.9% compared to 2022.
Operating revenues totalled €4.215 billion, an increase of 20.9% compared to 2022 and 27.8% compared to 2019.
Recurring operating costs totalled €3.83 billion, increasing by 18.3% compared to 2022.
