Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Lisbon council working 'intensively' to extend tram east - deputy mayo

Lisbon, March.26,2024(Lusa)-Lisbon city council is working "very intensively" on a project to extend an existing tram line along the riverfront to reach Santa Apolónia train station and Parque Tejo, beyond the Park of Nations (former Expo 98 site), on the northeastern edge of the city, the deputy mayor said on Tuesday.
"At the moment, it's still being conceived in terms of the project phase and the definition of the work, but I believe that by the end of our term we'll have news," said the deputy mayor, Filipe Anacoreta Correia of the conservative People's Party (CDS-PP), who is responsible for transport in the municipality, on the idea of extending the tram line to Parque Tejo.
Currently, the Carris tram on the riverfront runs between Praça da Figueira, downtown, to Algés in Oeiras, the municipality to the west of Lisbon.
Anacoreta Correia was speaking at a Lisbon municipal assembly meeting, during question time, after being asked by Socialisty assembly member Pedro Roque about the two lines under study for the LIOS - Sustainable Intermodal Line project, one in the west of Lisbon, to link Alcântara to Oeiras, and another in the east, to run between Santa Apolónia and Sacavém, in neighbouring Loures municipality.
In this context, Metropolitano de Lisboa - the state-owned company that runs Lisbon's metro system, has signed a collaboration protocol with Lisbon, Oeiras and Loures city councils and Carris, the Lisbon bus and tram company, for the study, planning and realisation of the project.
The deputy mayor said that there is "great commitment" to the LIOS project, noting that an interdisciplinary team has been set up with the council's urban planning and transport departments and Carris and Oeiras city council to realise the line in the western area, which is awaiting an economic feasibility study.
"Our expectation is that, after this study in the first half of the year, we'll be in a position to present more concrete data on the options that are on the table," he said, emphasising that coordination with Oeiras has been going "quite well."
Regarding the connection to Loures, he said that initially there was an assessment that the project would not be a priority for the neighbouring municipality, so "they would not yet be in a position to go much further" but that there is now "a willingness to re-evaluate and move forward."
The deputy mayor stressed that Carris is working on a project to extend the tram line to Parque Tejo, emphasising that this "does not jeopardise the interest of LIOS Oriental."
Asked by a member of the assembly for the Greens (PEV) about the request for Lisbon council to be represented on the board of directors of Metropolitano de Lisboa, Anacoreta Correia replied that "the government hasn't followed up on that request" and added that with the formation of the new government following the 10 March general election he hopes the situation will be resolved, because "it's of the utmost importance.
"We even think that the metro could be a municipal company and could be run by the city council, since a large part of the transport is in the city of Lisbon and even when it isn't there is an underlying interest," he argued, expressing "hope" that the change of government could bring "good news" in this field, as well as in others where the current government has interrupted a tradition of appointing a municipal representative to institutions with an impact on the city, such as the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, a charitable foundation overseen by central government.
Natacha Amaro, for the Communist Party (PCP) questioned the executive on the municipality's 'soft mobility' regulation, which was expected to come into force at the beginning of 2023; the deputy mayor highlighted an agreement with five operators of scooters and shared bicycles to create compulsory parking points and impose a speed limit of 20 kilometres per hour.
"When we arrived at city hall it was total chaos," he said, while acknowledging that this is a process that needs improvement.
In response to assembly members, he said that the report on an audit of the city's cycle paths and the plan to expand the cycle network would be presented in April, without providing any further information.
