Lusa - Business News - Portugal: VW Autoeuropa, workers reach new deal including 6.8% pay rise

Palmela, Portugal, March.26,2024(Lusa) - Management and Works Council at Autoeuropa, the Volkswagen subsidiary that is Portugal's largest exporter, on Thursday reached a new preliminary deal, to be valid for the next three years, providing for pay increases of 6.8% and other improvements over the previous provisional agreement reached on 9 March.
The previous agreement was not voted on by the 5,000 or so workers at the Autoeuropa plant due to some adverse reactions in plenary sessions of the workforce, which prompted the Works Council to request a new round of negotiations, which resulted in the new pre-agreement announced on Thursday.
The deal now reached provides for a wage increase of 6.8%, just like the previous one, but ensures an increase in the percentages of the minimum increases for the next two years, which are now to be 2.6% in 2025 and 2026 (instead of 2.0% in 2025 and 2.3% in 2026, as previously agreed).
The document also establishes that the increases to be applied in 2025 and 2026 will have a minimum value of €50 added to monthly salary or 0.6% above the average inflation of the previous year, and maintains the increase in the annual objectives bonus of up to 50%, which means that each employee will be able to receive up to one and a half times their salary in 2024, as well as a one-off bonus to be awarded in 2025 for the launch of a new model that will be produced at the plant, which is located in Palmela, in the district of Setúbal, south of Lisbon.
The Works Council statement also emphasises that all workers are to receive a minimum increase of €200 in their basic salary by the beginning of 2025, and that this amount will also be reflected in shift allowances and supplements paid for weekend work.
Also in a statement, the management emphasises the importance of a three-year agreement for the stability of the company and the transition of the Volkswagen plant to the future, at a time when there are major changes in the automotive sector worldwide.
The new pre-agreement is due to be voted on by the workers on 1 and 2 April, that is, Monday and Tuesday of next week.
Last year, Autoeuropa produced a total of 220,100 T-Roc vehicles, the only model currently in production at the Palmela plant.
According to the Volkswagen Group, the T-Roc was the third best-selling car in Europe in 2023.
