Lusa - Business News - EU/Presidency: EU platform to combat homelessness 'a giant leap' - minister

Lisbon, June.21,2021(Lusa)– Portugal's minister of labour, solidarity and social security said on Monday that the European platform to combat homelessness "is a giant leap", but also the beginning of a long road for the 27 Member States until 2030.
The formalisation of the platform took place today, in Lisbon, during the conference "Combating Homelessness - A Priority for Social Europe", organised by the Portuguese presidency of the Council of the European Union, together with the European Commission, through the signing of the Lisbon declaration by all member states, in addition to representatives of the European Union institutions, civil society organisations and social partners.
At the time, Minister Ana Mendes Godinho said she hoped the moment would stay in everyone's memory, stressing the pride she felt at the fact that the Portuguese presidency had succeeded in signing the Lisbon Declaration and launching the European platform.
"This is a giant leap, but it is also the beginning of a long, permanent, responsible and consistent journey that we will make together, always putting people at the centre of our policies, and specifically homeless people, giving them real hope, giving them an effective voice and listening to them with consequence and result," she said.
For the minister, more than a goal, the platform is in itself a "starting point" so that everyone is guaranteed the right to access housing, health or basic services and to real social inclusion.
Ana Mendes Godinho argued that "the time has come to act to make history" to "ensure a fair economic and social recovery", so that all may live in a dignified manner, in equality and without discrimination.
