Lusa - Business News - Sao Tome: World Bank to release $30M this year for projects, budget support

Sao Tome,Jan.13,2021(Lusa)-The World Bank will release $30 million (€24.6 million) this year to finance projects in Sao Tome and Principe and support the country's general state budget, the institution's new director of operations said on Wednesday.
"We are talking about thirty million dollars for now," said Jen-Christophe Carret, after a meeting with the prime minister, Jorge Bom Jesus, as part of a visit of several days to Sao Tome.
At the meeting, which lasted about an hour, he said, the two men reviewed "the partnerships between the World Bank and the government" and analysed the progress of ongoing projects, including the restoration of the Contador River dam and of National Road 1, as well as financial support that the World Bank provided to the government in 2020 to "mitigate the effects of the Covid-19 crisis."
Other topics discussed with the prime mninister, he said, included World Bank aid to the country's health sector, social protection and macroeconomic stabilisation.
"We also spoke about the prospects for resolving the country's current problems and looking in what direction the partnership between Sao Tome and Principe and the World Bank could go in the next five years," Carret said.
Two "big issues" also discussed at the meeting between the new director of operations and the prime minister was the energy transition in Sao Tome, which will entail the gradual replacement of the use of fossil fuels to generate electricity with renewable sources, as well as investment in human capital.
"The future of the whole country lies in its ability to educate the population to use the new technology," Carret explained, stressing that for this year the World Bank was thinking of stepping up funding for social protection to "help the most vulnerable people to absorb the decline in economic activity" caused by the pandemic.
The World Bank is also working with the San Tome authorities on a project to support the country's central bank in "consolidating the banking sector system and modernizing the payments system," Carret said.
He added that his institution was working with the government on "a new reform programme that could be financed through budget support."
The World Bank has promised the Sao Tome government that it will finance the purchase of vaccines against Covid-19.
"We have just received and responded positively to a request from the government to finance a programme of vaccination against Covid-19," he said, adding that "the project is still being considered and will be completed within a few months."
The agenda for Carret's visit includes meetings with several other members of the government, including the minister of planning, finance and the blue economy, Osvaldo Vaz, and ministers with portfolios in sectors that have projects financed by the World Bank.
Carret, a French national, also undertook a field visit to see the progress of the Coastal Resilience, National Road No. 1 and Contador hydroelectric power station projects, all of which are financed by the World Bank.
The visit comes at a time when the World Bank has been stepping up direct support to Sao Tome in response to the government's request to help it with the social and economic impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.
