Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Drones, 100 volunteer staff helping to map storm damage in Leiria

Caldas da Rainha, Leiria, Portugal, Feb. 2, 2026 (Lusa) - Portuguese unicorn, the AI-centric aerial surveillance company, Tekever, is mapping the damage caused by the storm in Leiria using drones and a team of 100 volunteers who have offered to help the municipality affected by Storm Kristin.

Tekever confirmed on Monday to the Lusa news agency that it is collaborating with Leiria city council and the relevant authorities "in response to the damage caused by storm Kristin, using drones and mapping the damage to support the technical assessment of damage in the municipality".

The company, based in Caldas da Rainha (Leiria district), with a hub in Leiria, "immediately made available a task force of more than 100 volunteer employees, in coordination with the authorities, to support the assessment of the situation on the ground and the response to the affected population".

In a written response to the Lusa news agency, Tekever explained that "the information collected will be processed and analysed using the ATLAS system", developed by this company.

In practice, this is "an advanced operational intelligence platform that allows real-time data processing, cross-referencing information from multiple sources and supporting quick and informed decisions".

The company also clarified that the use of the images "is intended solely to support the authorities," namely by mapping the damage caused by the storm, supporting "the authorities' decision-making," prioritising interventions on the ground and potentially "accelerating the recovery and reconstruction phase."

The company also assured that "all information and images collected in the course of these operations are used solely for technical and operational purposes and for the exclusive processing by the authorities."

Nine people have died since last week as a result of the bad weather. Civil Protection recorded five deaths directly associated with the passage of storm Kristin, and the Marinha Grande city council announced another fatality, to which were added three deaths recorded due to people falling off roofs (during repairs) and carbon monoxide poisoning from a generator.

The total or partial destruction of homes, businesses and equipment, fallen trees and structures, road and transport service disruptions, particularly railways, school closures and power, water and communication outages are the main material consequences of the storm, which has left several hundred people injured and homeless.

Leiria, Coimbra and Santarém are the districts with the most damage.

The Government has declared a state of emergency until next Sunday for 69 municipalities and announced a package of support measures worth up to €2.5 billion.
