Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Trains on Lisbon-Porto main line, other lines halted by bad weather

Lisbon, Jan. 29, 2026 (Lusa) - Train services on Portugal's northern railway lines between Lisbon and Porto for long-distance trains and on the Beira Baixa and Oeste lines remained suspended at 6:30 a.m. on Thursday morning due to problems caused by bad weather, according to CP.

On its Facebook page, the passenger train operator, CP, indicates that due to the passage of the Kristin depression over the mainland, train services on the Beira Baixa, Oeste and Norte lines between Porto and Lisbon, for long-distance trains and regional services between Coimbra B and Entroncamento, remain suspended.

On Wednesday, CP announced that it had suspended ticket sales for the day and for Thursday for Alfa Pendular and Intercidades trains on the Norte, Beira Alta and Beira Baixa lines.

On Wednesday, rail traffic was also suspended on the Douro, Sul, Évora, Beira Alta and Nono Ramal de Tomar lines and on the regional service between Coimbra B and Aveiro (Linha do Norte).

The National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) told Lusa at around 6:30 a.m. on Thursday morning that no "significant incidents" had been reported during the night.

However, the ANEPC website records around a hundred incidents, many of which occurred on Wednesday.

The passage of the Kristin depression through Portuguese territory left a trail of destruction, causing five deaths and several people to be displaced.

The most affected regions were Leiria (where the depression entered the mainland), Coimbra, Santarém and Lisbon.

Fallen trees and structures, road and transport service disruptions, particularly on railway lines, school closures and power, water and communication outages were the main material consequences of the storm.

Between midnight and 10 p.m. on Wednesday, ANEPC recorded more than 5,400 incidents in mainland Portugal due to the passage of storm Kristin, involving the deployment of more than 18,000 personnel. The regions of Leiria and Oeste were the most affected by the bad weather in terms of damage.

Most incidents were related to fallen trees (3,375) and collapsed structures (1,138).
