Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Lisbon-Porto train services halted by bad weather

Lisbon, Jan. 28, 2026 (Lusa) - Long-distance passenger train services on the main Lisbon-Porto line have been suspended on Wednesday morning due to problems on the track caused by bad weather, according to the Portuguese rail operator CP - Comboios de Portugal.

The company announced on its Facebook page that due to problems on the track caused by bad weather, services have also been suspended on the Southern, Western and Sado Lines.

CP also states that rail traffic between Mercês and Sintra is running on a single track.

On Tuesday, CP had warned passengers that due to the worsening weather conditions, there was a possibility of disruptions to rail traffic in the coming days.

CP recommends that passengers check the status of train services before travelling, using the carrier's website, app or customer service line.

Meanwhile, a tree fell on the Fertagus commuter railway line, which connects Lisbon and Setúbal via the 25 de Abril bridge, forcing the use of "a single track between Palmela and Pinhal Novo" today, causing "delays in traffic".

The warning appears on the website of the company that holds the concession for passenger rail transport on the so-called north-south axis, with 14 stations between Roma-Areeiro (Lisbon) and Setúbal.

Mainland Portugal is being affected by the effects of the Kristin depression, with rain, wind, snow and rough seas, and several warnings have been issued by Portugal's national meteorological institute (IPMA).

The bad weather has already caused one driver's death in Povos, Vila Franca de Xira, in the Lisbon region, after a tree fell on the light vehicle in which he was travelling, according to the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC).

Between midnight and 6 a.m. today, ANEPC recorded 655 incidents, with a particular incidence in the region of Lisbon, the Setúbal Peninsula and the western region.

"We had 217 incidents in the Lisbon region, with the exception of the municipality of Lisbon, which is covered by the fire brigade, 104 in the Setúbal Peninsula and 82 in the West region," Paulo Santos of the ANEPC told Lusa at around 6 a.m. today.

According to Paulo Santos, most of the incidents involve fallen trees and structures, with roads blocked and power outages in many regions.

In Leiria, the sub-regional commander of Emergency and Civil Protection for the Region today asked people not to leave their homes, as the city's streets are "practically all impassable".

Speaking to the Lusa news agency at 6:20 a.m., Carlos Guerra advised citizens "not to leave their homes for the time being, especially in the Leiria area."

"The streets are practically all impassable, there is still a need to cut down many trees and clear many roads, and only for strictly necessary, very urgent reasons should people try to drive their vehicles," he said.

According to the sub-regional commander, "all the roads here in the Leiria area are affected by many fallen trees and debris on the road," and "cleaning up operations are necessary".
