Évora, Portugal, Dec. 18, 2025 (Lusa) - Hyperion Renewables has begun construction on its first energy storage projects in Estremoz and Évora, which could provide power to more than 5,000 households, it announced on Thursday.
In a statement, the company explained that the projects are being developed in partnership with Omexom Portugal, a specialist in engineering and energy infrastructure, and Saft, a TotalEnergies subsidiary dedicated to advanced battery storage solutions.
"Together, the three companies are taking a decisive step towards the stability of the electricity grid and a new stage in the national energy transition," the statement said.
Located in Estremoz and Évora, the projects, with 16 MW of injection power and 64 MWh of storage capacity, will be installed together with the existing 29 MWp and 52 MWp solar power plants," they add.
The promoters also explained that, during their construction and operation cycle, it is estimated that "between 25 and 30 direct and indirect jobs" will be created.
The statement also emphasised that the operation will "increase the efficiency of assets", "reduce losses" in periods of high solar production and contribute directly to "a more balanced energy mix".
"The energy stored daily will be sufficient to supply more than 5,000 households, strengthening energy independence and supporting national decarbonisation goals," the document reads.
According to the developers, the systems represent "a significant milestone" in the integration of solar production and storage, bringing Portugal closer to the energy model that will mark the next decade and which involves an "intelligent combination" of renewable generation and energy storage capacity to ensure greater efficiency, flexibility and security of supply.
"Omexom Portugal will ensure the execution, and is responsible for the design, supply and construction under a Balance of Plant (BoP) regime, and by Saft, which will manufacture and supply the main technology: 21 containers, power conversion systems with grid-forming capacity and advanced energy management solutions," they explain.
The projects have "partial support" from the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP).
"These will be the first hybrid projects (solar plus storage) in Hyperion's portfolio and some of the first investments of this type to move forward in Iberia, positioning the company and the country at the forefront of energy innovation," they said.
In addition to their energy impact, these projects also have significant economic and social dimensions for the regions where they are located, according to Hyperion Renewables.
