Lisbon, Dec. 18, 2025 (Lusa) - Incumbent train operator CP received on Thursday the first of 22 new regional trains manufactured by Stadler, an order placed in 2020 by the state-owned company during António Costa's second term in office.
In a statement, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing confirmed that the first multiple-unit was delivered today to CP - Comboios de Portugal, to reinforce regional service, with this unit expected to "enter service in the second half of 2026".
"It has been 23 years since a new train arrived in Portugal, a decisive step towards the modernisation and sustainability of CP's fleet and, consequently, towards increasing supply," said the ministry led by Miguel Pinto Luz.
The rain delivered today is part of an order for 22 new multiple units from Stadler, 12 of which are dual-mode (electric and diesel traction), placed in 2020 for €158 million, intended primarily for regional service on the Oeste and Alentejo lines.
In the statement, the ministry recalls that the €158 million investment was supported "by Sustentável 2030 and the Environmental Fund".
"This is the first unit in a series of major investments that will result in around 200 new trains for CP," says the ministry, adding that the trains will contribute to strengthening the "sustainability of the fleet" and "responding to the growing number of rail users", which "is already expected to reach the 200 million mark in 2025".
The contract, signed in October 2020 for the acquisition of the Flirt model, includes the supply of 12 dual-mode multiple units and 10 electric ones, the respective parts, and the provision of preventive and corrective maintenance services for a minimum period of three years, accompanied by training services.
