Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Airports handle almost 64M passengers until October, 4.7% increase YoY

Lisbon, Dec. 12, 2025 (Lusa) - The number of passengers travelling through national airports increased by 4.7% up to October, compared to the same period in 2024, to 63.869 million, according to data released by Statistics Portugal (INE) on Friday.

According to INE's "Quick Statistics on Air Transport", Lisbon airport accounted for 48.1% of total passengers in that period, or 30.7 million, representing an increase of 2.9% compared to the same period in 2024.

Porto airport accounted for 22.8% of passengers, reaching 14.5 million (+5.9%), and Faro airport recorded a 5.7% increase, totalling 9.6 million passengers (15.0% of the total).

In October alone, 23,000 commercial aircraft landed at national airports, corresponding to 6.8 million passengers (arrivals, departures and direct transits) and 22,200 tonnes of cargo and mail (+4.4%, +4.5% and -7.5%, respectively, compared to October 2024).

Since the beginning of this year, monthly passenger volumes at national airports have reached historic highs, except in February.

In October, the average daily arrivals reached 108,600 passengers, a figure higher than that observed in the same month of 2024 (103,700), representing a growth of 4.8%.

In October, 83.1% of passengers arriving at national airports were international passengers, totalling 2.8 million passengers (+5.3%).

Most of these passengers' flights originated in Europe, which accounted for 70.0% of the total, up 4.6% from October 2024, while the Americas remained the second-largest origin, accounting for 8.9% of total passengers arriving (+8.7%).

Of the passengers who boarded in October, 83.6% corresponded to international traffic, totalling 2.9 million passengers (+4.8%).

Most had airports on the European continent as their main destination (69.5% of the total), a 4.4% increase from October 2024. Airports on the American continent were the second main destination for passengers disembarking (9.7% of the total; +5.7%).

Considering the volume of passengers disembarking and embarking on international flights between January and October, the United Kingdom remained the main country of origin and destination, with increases of 2.3% in the number of passengers disembarking and 2.2% in the number of passengers embarking compared to the same period in 2024.

In contrast, France recorded decreases in the number of passengers disembarking (-1.9%) and embarking (-1.5%), still occupying second place, followed by Spain, Germany and Italy in third, fourth and fifth place among the leading countries of origin and destination.

In the first 10 months of the year, there was a 0.6% increase in cargo and mail traffic at national airports compared to the same period in 2024, totalling 211,200 tonnes.

Freight traffic at Lisbon airport accounted for 77.8% of the total, reaching 164,300 tonnes, an increase of 1.0% compared to the same period in 2024.

In the remaining airports, freight and mail traffic decreased by 0.9% until October.
