Luanda, Nov. 20, 2025 (Lusa) - The Minister of State and head of the Military House of the President of Angola said on Thursday that the new Angolan census, presented today, allows the government to reassess the goals and objectives established in the main planning and management instruments.
Francisco Furtado, who is the coordinator of the multisectoral commission to support the 2024 General Population and Housing Census, explained that with the results of the census, "the portrait of the country in numbers is more robust and up to date".
According to the government official, based on this census, carried out in September last year, the national food and nutrition security strategy, the National Development Plan, the National Spatial Planning Plan, as well as sectoral programmes in health, education, housing, sanitation and others can be reassessed.
He said that other reports would be produced by the national statistics institute (INE), namely provincial profiles, thematic reports on children, youth, gender, the elderly, employment, civil registration, education, housing and the environment, people with disabilities, demographic growth trends and maps of territorial communities.
In his closing speech at the event to publicise the census results, the minister pointed out that Angola today has 36.6 million inhabitants, representing an average annual growth rate of 3.6% compared to the 2014 census.
"During this census period, the country saw an increase in its housing stock of around 9.1 million occupied homes and an increase in households of almost the same proportion," he said.
The director-general of Angola's INE said that the 2024 census data was "very reliable and very solid," despite lower coverage compared to the 2014 census.
According to Joel Futi, from the point of view of the consistency of data collection, the 2024 census "was much better".
Joel Futi emphasised that the entire process was digital, making it easier to publish the results ten months after they were carried out.
Three reports were produced: the first, with the definitive results of the census; the second, a summary report based mainly on cartograms of Angola's 21 provinces; and the coverage inquiry report, which assessed the coverage and quality of the census.
