Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Ryanair's demand for digital boarding passes 'abusive' - association

Lisbon, Nov. 5, 2025 (Lusa) - Deco has called for the intervention of the National Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC) and the Public Prosecutor's Office to prevent Ryanair from imposing the exclusive use of digital boarding passes from next week, considering the measure "abusive".

"As it considers the company's imposition, which forces passengers to download an app and prevents them from travelling peacefully with physical documents, to be unjustified, Deco has asked ANAC to intervene and the Public Prosecutor's Office to take legal action to prohibit the carrier from maintaining the clauses it considers to be abusive in the contracts," the consumer protection association announced on Wednesday.

In a statement, Deco expressed concern about "yet another measure by the airline that discriminates against and makes life difficult for passengers who don't have smartphones or are simply less familiar with digital tools".

"After having introduced significant fees for airport check-in, the carrier's new manoeuvre once again penalises consumers with fewer digital skills and could mean new queues at airports," it said.

Ryanair recently announced that, as of 12 November, it will no longer accept printed boarding passes and passengers will have to use digital boarding passes.

For the association, this is an "abusive imposition" without "any technical regulatory justification".
