Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Porto Editora publishes short-list for word of the year 2025

Porto, Nov. 3, 2025 (Lusa) - ‘Apagão’, “flotilha” and ‘tarefeiro’ (blackuot, flotila and labourer) are among the ten finalists in the election for Word of the Year 2025, revealed by Porto Editora, promoter of the initiative, on Monday.

In a statement, Porto Editora announced that the ten words that will be voted on are ‘agent (AI)’, ‘blackout’, ‘elections’, ‘lift’, ‘flotilla’, ‘fires’, ‘immigration’, ‘moderate’, “perception” and ‘labourer’.

Until the end of November it will be possible to vote via the website www.palavradoano.pt.

"More than a choice, the Word of the Year is a mirror of our collective memory. The list of finalist words reflects the themes and events that marked the year and was drawn up on the basis of more than 6,500 suggestions sent in by the Portuguese, the most searched words in Infopédia's Portuguese language dictionary and Porto Editora's ongoing work of observing the language, particularly in the media and on social networks," reads the press release issued by the publishing group.

Last year, when the 50th anniversary of 25 April was marked, the most voted word was ‘freedom’.

In previous editions, the words chosen were ‘freedom’ (2024), ‘teacher’ (2023), ‘war’ (2022), ‘vaccine’ (2021), “nostalgia” (2020), ‘domestic violence’ (2019), ‘nurse’ (2018), ‘fires’ (2017), ‘geringonça’ (2016), ‘refugee’ (2015), ‘corruption’ (2014), ‘firefighter’ (2013), ‘entroika-ed’ (2012), ‘austerity’ (2011), “vuvuzela” (2010) and ‘scrutinise’ (2009).
