Lusa - Business News - Macau: Casino takings hit six-year maximum in October

Macau, China, Nov. 1, 2025 (Lusa) - Macau casino revenues rose 15.9% in October compared to the same period in 2024, reaching the highest monthly figure in the last six years, it was announced on Saturday.

The gaming sector collected 24.1 billion patacas (€2.6 billion) last month, the highest monthly revenue since October 2019, Macau's Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) revealed.

This is even though, due to Typhoon Matmo, the Macau authorities raised the tropical storm signal to level 8 —the third-highest —leading to the suspension of public transport on 4 October.

This coincided with the so-called “golden week” of China's National Day (1 October), a period of public holidays that this year was extended by eight days, one more than in 2024, thanks to the proximity of the Lunar Cake Festival (7 October).

The “golden week” in October is the second biggest mass movement in China, after the Lunar New Year period, the main traditional family festival, which takes place in January or February, depending on the lunar calendar.

Macau received a total of 1.14 million visitors, 16.5% more than in the same period in 2024, including more than 191,000 on 4 October alone, the highest daily figure for the “golden week” of October.

The 15.9 % year-on-year rise in revenues in October exceeded analysts' expectations.

JP Morgan Securities had predicted an increase of between 3% and 6%, while Seaport Research Partners analyst Vitaly Umansky expected growth of 10%.

The figure recorded in October represents 91.1% of that achieved in the same month of 2019, before the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, when Macau casinos had revenues of 26.4 billion patacas (€2.86 billion).

In terms of accumulated gross revenue, the first ten months of 2025 saw an 8% increase compared to the same period last year, reaching 205.4 billion patacas (€22.2 billion).

Macau closed 2024 with total revenues of 226.8 billion patacas €(24.5 billion), 23.9% more than the previous year.

In the initial budget for 2025, the Macau government predicted that the year would close with total revenues of 240 billion patacas (€25.9 billion), an increase of 6% compared to last year.

But on 11 June, the territory's parliament approved a new budget, proposed by the government, which reduces the forecast for public revenue by 4.56 billion patacas (€492.7 million).

The gambling capital of the world, Macau, is the only place in China where casino gambling is legal.

Six concessionaires operate in the territory: MGM, Galaxy, Venetian, Melco, Wynn and SJM, which renewed their concession contract in December 2023 for the next ten years and which came into force on 1 January 2024.
