Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: JD Vance welcomes President Chapo at White House

Maputo, Oct. 31, 2025 (Lusa) - The Mozambican Presidency said on Friday that the meeting at the White House between the head of state, Daniel Chapo, and the US Vice President, JD Vance, represents the consolidation of the partnership between the two countries.

"The meeting took place in a context in which the two countries are seeking to consolidate a modern, future-oriented partnership centred on sustainable growth, innovation and the well-being of the people," the Presidency said in a statement about Thursday's meeting in Washington between Chapo and JD Vance.

The Mozambican head of state ended a five-day visit to the United States today. The meeting with the US vice-president, adds the Presidency, "was part of efforts to strengthen bilateral relations between Mozambique and the United States, with emphasis on cooperation in the energy, infrastructure, security, education, tourism, digital transition and agriculture sectors".

"During the talks, issues of common interest were addressed, namely increasing trade, technical and scientific cooperation, US investment in strategic sectors of the Mozambican economy and Mozambique's role in promoting peace, maritime security and sustainable development in Africa," it said.

The Presidency also said that the meeting "highlighted the commitment of both parties to strengthen cooperation based on transparency, mutual trust and shared benefits, creating conditions for an environment favourable to investment and the transfer of knowledge".

He added that JD Vance represented US President Donald Trump at the meeting, who was "on an official mission to the Asian continent, in a gesture that reinforces the recognition of Mozambique's importance as a strategic partner and actor of stability in southern Africa".

"Daniel Chapo's visit to the United States represents a new impetus in the relationship between the two countries, marked by openness to dialogue and a commitment to areas that promote economic prosperity and shared security," said the Presidency.

It concluded by assuming that the trip is part of the "strategy to consolidate Mozambique's international presence, aimed at strengthening partnerships that accelerate industrialisation, productive diversification and social inclusion", as "fundamental pillars" of the governance programme of President Daniel Chapo, who took office in January 2025.
