According to a statement released on Wednesday by the company, between January and September this year, 27.4 million passengers passed through Lisbon airport (an increase of + 2.8%). Porto 12.9 million (+ 5.8%), Faro 8.4 million (+ 6.1%), Madeira 4.3 million (+ 13%) and the Azores 2.7 million (+ 3.1%).
Considering only the third quarter, which covers the summer months, the increase was 4.6%, to 22 million passengers across all infrastructures. During this period, Madeira stood out, with an increase of 16% compared to the same period last year.
The number of commercial flights grew by 3.7% in the first nine months of the year.
"In Portugal, the summer season was marked by solid traffic growth in Lisbon and, even more so, in Porto, Faro and Funchal (+7% on average at these four airports)," Vinci said in the same note.
According to the company, "in Lisbon, European connections (Germany and Italy in particular) served by low-cost airlines and long-haul traffic with the United States and Brazil were the main drivers".
The airports of Porto and Faro "continue to attract many passengers from the United Kingdom and Germany," it said.
Overall, Vinci Airports recorded "strong traffic growth in the third quarter, welcoming 94 million passengers, an increase of 4.2% over the previous year, or 3.8 million additional travellers".
