The Embassy of Greece in Belgium and the Greek Community of Brussels honoured the two leading Greek composers, Mikis Theodorakis and Manos Hatzidakis, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of their birth, as well as the great Austrian composer Udo Jüergens, who composed the emblematic song "Griechischer Wein" ("Greek Wine"), with lyrics by the German philhellene Michael Kunze.
The Ambassador of Greece to Belgium, Sofia Grammata, introduced the story of the birth of this particular song, pointing out that it was written with love for the Greeks of the Diaspora and became an anthem about the Greek immigrants' longing for their country. The president of the Greek Community, Philippos Kotsaridis, also delivered a greeting.
In the musical part of the evening, soprano Anna Mathioudaki and Anna Alvizou, who accompanied her on the piano, presented a programme with works by the three renowned composers, while the Greek Choir of Brussels performed an a capella rendition of two songs by Hatzidakis and Theodorakis to lyrics by Nikos Gatsos about the Greek diaspora and the concept of homeland. The Lyceum of Greek Women in Brussels accompanied the event with Greek traditional and folk dances, the rhythm of which influenced the artistic work of the great Greek composers.
During the event, Ambassador Sofia Grammata also had the opportunity to warmly thank Professor Robert Laffineur, until now Honorary Consul of Greece in Liège, who has best promoted the image of Greek Culture in Wallonia throughout his term, which is being successfully completed.
