Lusa - Business News - Angola: Huawei to build R&D centre by 2027

Luanda, Oct. 3, 2025 (Lusa) - Chinese telecommunications multinational Huawei, will set up a Research and Development Centre in Angola by 2027 to strengthen digital inclusion and expand its presence in Africa, the company's head of Portuguese-speaking countries said on Friday.

Hover Gao, Huawei's head for the sub-Saharan Africa region, spoke to the press after being received by Angolan Head of State João Lourenço.

Speaking to journalists, Huawei's general manager for Portuguese-speaking countries, António Hou, said that issues relating to the multinational's projects in Angola were discussed at the meeting, stressing that the new centre is part of its commitment to digital transformation and universal access to technology in Angola.

"We believe that technology should not be a privilege for the few. We will continue to contribute to Angola achieving universal access to the internet and the benefits of digital transformation," said António Hou, quoted by Angop, the Angolan state news agency.

He also said that in addition to strengthening digital inclusion, the centre will accelerate the development of strategic sectors such as education, health and connectivity, promoting equitable access to new technologies.

António Hou pointed out that the location for the construction of the centre is currently being analysed and the investment amount is yet to be defined, but the decision to move forward with the project has already been made.

"We have already inaugurated Huawei's regional headquarters for all of Africa this year, and this will be the second major initiative we will implement," he said.

In addition to technological infrastructure, the project includes partnerships with Angolan universities to train 7,000 talents in areas such as artificial intelligence, connectivity and emerging technologies by 2027.
