Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Stock market highest level since 2011, with Sonae leading the gains

Lisbon, Oct. 3, 2025 (Lusa) - The Lisbon stock market reversed the opening trend and traded higher, with the PSI at its highest since February 2011 and Sonae leading the gains, rising 1.50% to €1.36.

At around 9:35 a.m. in Lisbon, the PSI, which has 16 companies since 22nd September, reversed the opening trend and advanced 0.52% to 8,087.47 points, with nine stocks rising, five falling and two holding their ground (Corticeira Amorim at €7.23 and Ibersol at €10.1).

Sonae's shares were followed by Jerónimo Martins, Galp and NOS, which rose 1.36% to €20.82, 1.30% to €16.78 and 0.78% to €3.88, respectively.

BCP, CTT and Semapa shares rose 0.63% to €0.77, 0.56% to €7.24 and 0.55% to €18.42, respectively.

The other two shares that rose were those of Teixeira Duarte (0.38% to €0.53) and REN (0.16% to €3.05).

On the other hand, shares in Mota-Engil, Navigator and EDP Renováveis fell 0.44% to €4.97, 0.37% to €3.20 and 0.25% to €11.82.

Altri and EDP shares also fell, by 0.20% to €4.91 and 0.05% to €4.11, respectively.

The main European stock markets opened higher today, in a session in which the official US employment report, a key piece of data for the Federal Reserve (Fed), will not be published due to the temporary closure of the US administration.

The macroeconomic agenda includes the publication of PMIs in the eurozone's main economies. At the same time, the US Department of Labour will not publish the relevant employment report for September, which is crucial for the Fed to determine whether or not it is necessary to lower key interest rates again at the meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) later this month.

Analysts quoted by Efe believe that the US government shutdown, which currently affects non-essential services, will be brief and will not have a major impact on the economic scenario.

Wall Street futures, whose main indices ended at all-time highs on Thursday, rose by 0.35% for technology and 0.27% for the Dow Jones.

In Asia, for the third day in a row, investors have no reference to the Chinese stock markets, which remain closed due to the national day of the People's Republic of China, while in Japan, the Nikkei index on the Tokyo stock exchange rose by 1.85% to a new record level, boosted by the weakness of the yen and the good performance of semiconductor companies.

The mainland Chinese stock exchanges, Shanghai and Shenzhen, won't resume trading until 9 October.

Brent, Europe's benchmark crude oil for December delivery, is rising to $64.77, up from $64.11 on Thursday.

The euro advanced to $1.1723 on the Frankfurt exchange market, up from $1.1715 on Thursday and a new four-year high of $1.1865 on 16 September.
