Lusa - Business News - Portugal: End of LNG imports will weaken Russian economy, bring peace - PM

Copenhagen, Oct. 2, 2025 (Lusa) - The prime minister said on Thursday that Portugal is willing to "make the effort" to bring forward the end of Russian liquefied natural gas imports, without setting any deadlines, considering that peace can be achieved through the "economic weakening" of Moscow.

"The economic weakening of Russia is a path to achieving peace [in Ukraine], greater security and deterring a more aggressive attitude on the part of the Russian Federation," said Luís Montenegro at a press conference in Copenhagen (Denmark) at the end of a meeting of the European Political Community.

Moments after a bilateral meeting with the Ukrainian President, Luís Montenegro echoed Volodymyr Zelensky's request earlier in the morning for a definitive end to imports of Russian liquefied natural gas.

"Portugal is ready to make this effort, as it is, above all, committed to further boosting its energy production, which is exclusively from renewable sources," said the prime minister.

However, Luís Montenegro did not commit to a deadline for achieving this ambition.

The prime minister said that Portugal can "contribute not only more production capacity to the European area, but also ensure that this production is green, clean and environmentally friendly": "It's a win-win situation."
