ANSA - Armani dominates global front pages, 'Farewell to the King'

'The world has lost a giant' says The Guardian

The death of Giorgio Armani dominated front pages across the world Friday as global media saluted the Italian fashion icon known as King George, who died Thursday aged 91.
The importance Giorgio Armani had not only in the world of fashion but in lifestyle in general was evidenced by the front pages of international newspapers, from France's Le Figaro to the American Washington Post.
"His distinctive fashion transformed the red carpet," headlined the Post, which also dedicated the opening of its Style supplement to him with the headline "Always Armani." El Pais of Spain called him a "fashion legend," while another Spanish daily, El Mundo, bade "farewell to the king." "The world has lost a giant," headlined the British Guardian, recalling that "he reinvented the men's suit" and was "the architect of the way we dress today," while the Wall Street Journal celebrated the independence of his group in a fashion world rife with acquisitions and multinationals.
"The last emperor of Italian fashion" was the headline in Le Figaro, quoting the words of Matthieu Blazy, artistic director of Chanel ("a true source of inspiration") and Simone Porte Jacquemus ("I always thought he was a genius, both personally and professionally.

Forever Giorgio").
The Süddeutsche Zeitung of Germany called him "the Prince of Fashion," and the Frankfurter Zeitung called him "one of the greatest designers of the twentieth century."
