Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: Shoprite supermarkets assessing permanence in country

Maputo, Sept. 5, 2025 (Lusa) - Supermarket chain Shoprite is analysing whether to stay in Mozambique, where it operates 26 stores, as part of its consolidation process in the continent's markets, a source from the South African group told Lusa.

"The group has consolidated its African operations in recent years and we continue to closely monitor the situation in Mozambique," said an official Shoprite source, questioned by Lusa, adding that the country "is on a watch list" regarding the continuity of the operation, "due to the current challenges in the operating environment".

"No final decision has been made regarding our operations in the country. Should this change, we will communicate any news to the market," the source added.

Last November, the South African supermarket chain went so far as to temporarily close commercial spaces it operates in Maputo and "other high-risk areas", due to the post-election demonstrations, which led to the looting and vandalisation of shops in the capital.

According to the 2024 annual report and accounts, Shoprite - which is present in nine African countries in addition to South Africa - employed 1,234 workers in Mozambique at the end of the year.

In 2024, it reduced its number of shops in the country to 26, compared to the 27 it operated in 2024, according to the same document.
