Lisbon, Sept. 5, 2025 (Lusa) - The wreckage of the Elevador da Glória funicular that crashed on Wednesday, and the train that was immobilised near Restauradores, were removed during the night and early hours of Friday, according to Lisbon Civil Protection.
"During the night, a complex operation was carried out with various means and teams for the total removal of the carriages and rubble and the cleaning of the track, by Carris and with the support of the municipal services," said a note sent to Lusa by the director of Lisbon's Municipal Civil Protection Service.
According to Margarida Castro Martins, during the course of today, the "resurfacing work and replacement of the pavement" will be carried out. The technical services of the City Council and Municipal Civil Protection will also carry out a more detailed inspection of the building the carriage crashed into, which in an initial assessment did not present any structural risk".
Once these works are complete, the roads will be fully reopened and normality restored to the area, and the closed shops will be told that they can resume their activities, which should only happen at the end of the day, the note explained.
The Glória funicular in Lisbon derailed on Wednesday, causing 16 deaths and two dozen injuries.
The government decreed a day of national mourning to be observed on Thursday, and the Lisbon City Council decreed three days of municipal mourning, between Thursday and Saturday, for the victims of the accident.
The Elevador da Glória, operated by Carris, connects Restauradores to the Jardim de São Pedro de Alcântara in Bairro Alto, covering a route of approximately 265 metres and is very popular with tourists.
The maintenance and supervision history of the lift will be thoroughly analysed by the Office for the Prevention and Investigation of Accidents with Aircraft and Railway Accidents (GPIAAF), which will be counting on external help in the investigation.
On Thursday, GPIAAF coordinator Nelson Oliveira said that "everything relevant to the investigation" will be analysed.
