Lisbon, Sept. 4, 2025 (Lusa) - Fidelidade, the insurer of the Lisbon funicular operator Carris, expressed its "total availability" on Thursday to provide assistance and facilitate the "necessary compensation and assistance processes" for the victims of the Glória funicular disaster, which occurred on Wednesday.
In a statement, Fidelidade began by expressing "its deep sorrow and heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the victims", emphasising that "the absolute priority at the moment is to support all those affected by this tragedy".
According to the same press release, "to support the victims and their families, Fidelidade, as the insurer of Carris, has set up a telephone hotline in Portuguese, English and French, taking into account the large number of foreign citizens involved".
This line is available on 217948826, "24 hours a day, seven days a week", with the insurer providing "specialised psychological support teams".
"We reiterate our total willingness to collaborate with all the competent bodies and to facilitate the necessary compensation and assistance processes quickly and transparently," emphasised Fidelidade.
The insurer emphasised that its commitment is "to stand by the victims, their families and the entire community, providing the support that this situation demands with the utmost responsibility, humanity and respect".
The accident caused 16 deaths, a figure that corrects the 17 released this morning, according to Civil Protection.
The crash also caused two dozen injuries, including Portuguese and foreigners of various nationalities.
The government has decreed a day of national mourning this Thursday.
The Glória funicular, operated by Carris, connects Restauradores to the Jardim de São Pedro de Alcântara in Bairro Alto, spanning a route of approximately 265 metres and is very popular with tourists.
