Lisbon, Sept. 4, 2025 (Lusa) - The General Workers' Union (UGT) expressed its "deep dismay" and "heartfelt sorrow" on Thursday at the accident in the Glória funicular in Lisbon, paying tribute to the brakeman, one of the fatalities and a member of a union affiliated to the confederation.
"To the families of the victims and to all those who suffer, directly or indirectly, from this irreparable loss, we extend our most sincere condolences, reaffirming our solidarity and expressing the wish for a speedy and full recovery to all those injured," the UGT said in a statement.
Expressing its "deepest sympathy for all the lives lost", the trade union centre also pays tribute to brakeman André Marques, a member of the Transport Workers' Union (SITRA), one of the trade union organisations affiliated to the UGT, who died while on the job.
"To his family, friends and professional colleagues, we leave a word of deep sorrow and solidarity in this moment of irreparable pain," it said.
In the statement, the UGT also recognises and praises "the effort, promptness and dedication of all the entities and professionals involved in the rescue operations" for the victims of the accident.
The Glória funicular in Lisbon derailed on Wednesday, causing 17 deaths and 21 injuries, including Portuguese and foreigners of various nationalities.
Of the 17 dead, 15 were confirmed at the scene of the accident, and two died in the hospitals to which they had been transported.
The government decreed a day of national mourning on Thursday.
Carris operates the Glória funicular, which connects Restauradores to the Jardim de São Pedro de Alcântara in Bairro Alto, spanning a distance of approximately 265 metres and is very popular with tourists.
