Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Unemployment rate falls to 5.8% in July - official

Lisbon, Aug. 29, 2025 (Lusa) - The unemployment rate fell to 5.8% in July, compared to the same month in 2024 (-0.7 percentage points) and the previous month (-0.3 points), according to the first estimate released on Friday by Statistics Portugal (INE).

According to INE data, the labour underutilisation rate was estimated at 10%, lower than in June (0.3 percentage points), three months earlier (0.5 points) and the same month a year earlier (1.1 points).

In the month under review, the employed population (5,260,000) reached its highest level since February 1998.

The unemployed population (323.,00) fell in relation to the three comparison periods: the previous month (15,700; 4.6%), three months earlier (23,800; 6.8%) and the same month in 2024 (28,800; 8.2%).

According to INE, the active population (5,583,600) increased compared to June 2025 (1,800; an almost zero relative change), April of the same year (15,600; 0.3%) and July 2024 (173,200; 3.2%).

Meanwhile, the inactive population (2,456,400) increased compared to the previous month (6,700; 0.3%) and three months earlier (8,900; 0.4%), and decreased compared to the same month last year (59,100; 2.4%).

When releasing the July statistics, which are still provisional, INE set definitive figures for June, having slightly revised upwards the rate for that month compared to what had previously been released, from 6%t to 6.1%.

The unemployment rate continues to be higher among women than men, with 6.2% unemployment among women in July, compared to 5.3% among men.

Among young people, in June and July this year, the unemployment rate (18.9%) was the lowest since June 2023 (18.5%), while the adult unemployment rate in July (4.8%) was the lowest since February 2022 (4.7%).
