Lisbon, Aug. 25, 2025 (Lusa) - Portugal's post office, CTT, will temporarily suspend the transport of postal consignments of goods to the USA from Tuesday, the Post Office announced today, following the same position of the main European companies in the sector.
"Due to the discontinuation of the Minimis regime (exemption from customs duties for imported goods) by the US, CTT will temporarily suspend the transport of postal consignments containing these goods to the US in all mail products, universal service parcels and international express parcels as of 26 August," reads the statement.
Shipments destined for the US containing “exclusively documents and gifts between individuals with a value of less than $100 will not be impacted by this measure”, say CTT.
Shipments containing goods to the US "can continue to be sent using the Premium International product, for CTT Expresso contract customers, which allows shipments of up to 30kg with collection and delivery at the most convenient location, with the fees being borne by the recipients," the Post Office said.
The change to the Minimis regime in the US is the result of an Executive Order by US President Donald Trump, which will come into force on 29 August and removes the exemption from tariffs, with all shipments to the US now paying customs duties, CTT points out.
This change "directly affects international postal flows and obliges shippers to pay customs duties before transport to the US".
The details of the new requirements "have not yet been fully clarified by the US customs authorities and will require operational adaptations on the part of postal companies worldwide", continue Correios de Portugal.
In this way, CTT joins other European operators in suspending postal shipments of goods to the US "such as bpost (Belgium), La Poste (France), Deutsche Post (Germany), among others".
Despite the short period between the announcement of the government order and the start of the new regime, "every effort is being made by CTT to implement the necessary changes to ensure that it will be able to provide the service of sending postal goods to the USA in all modes of delivery", they add.
The suspension will last "for the time strictly necessary" for the implementation of these changes, say CTT, emphasising that it "covers postal items containing goods destined for the USA, Porto Rico and other territories under its administration".
