Praia, Aug. 21, 2025 (Lusa) - The Cabo Verde's government has approved additional funding of around €8.4 million, granted by the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, to reinforce the project to build and rehabilitate health infrastructure.
According to the decree published today in the Official Gazette, the agreement, signed on 23 April 2025, "aims to ensure the completion of essential components of the project, including construction and rehabilitation works for hospitals and health centres, the supply of medical equipment, the purchase of ambulances, the purchase of land and technical consultancy and implementation supervision services".
The project includes the construction of new buildings, such as the Diagnostic Centre and Public Health Laboratory in Praia, and health centres in the interior of Santiago, namely in São Lourenço dos Órgãos, Santa Cruz and Santa Catarina.
It also includes the rehabilitation of existing units, such as the Baptista de Sousa Hospital and the Occupational Therapy Centre on the island of São Vicente, as well as the Boa Vista and Trindade health centres in the city of Praia.
Furniture and medical equipment will be supplied for all these facilities, including the haemodialysis centre at Agostinho Neto Hospital in Praia.
Five ambulances will also be supplied.
The supplementary loan will be consolidated with the previous agreement from 2013, with an interest rate of 1.5% per year and an additional 0.5% for administrative expenses.
Realisation of the project began in 2015, and its completion is scheduled for the first quarter of 2028.
According to the government, the aim is to strengthen the development of the health sector in Cabo Verde, improve the quality and efficiency of medical coverage and "respond to the growing need for specialised diagnostic and therapeutic services, contributing to poverty reduction and the country's social and economic development".
