Aveiro, Portugal, Aug. 21, 2025 (Lusa) - The port of Aveiro will supply power to ships at berth so that they don't burn fuel during their stay, the port administration said on Thursday.
The Port of Aveiro Administration (APA) has opened a public tender for the supply of a system to power ships, according to a notice published in the Diário da República.
The tender for the supply of the “Onshore Power Supply” (OPS) system has a base price of €1.4 million and an execution period of 300 days.
According to the chairman of the APA's board of directors, Eduardo Feio, ‘the aim is to allow ships, especially from 2030 onwards, to plug into the socket on the quay so that they are not burning fuel while they remain in port’.
Another tender was also opened today by publication in the Diário da República for the contract to build the medium voltage network in the port of Aveiro, this one with a larger volume of investment, the base value of the procedure being €7.8 million.
Both tenders are part of the energy transition strategy approved in 2021, including the recently announced photovoltaic self-production infrastructures.
'These are investments which, together, are around €20 million and are aimed at increasing the competitiveness and sustainability of the port of Aveiro, in line with the 5+ Strategy for Ports, approved by the government,' Eduardo Feio added.
'The port's electrification projects will cost around €20 million, through our own funds and funds from the RRP (Recovery and Resilience Plan),' he explained.
According to the president of the port administration, the goals of this investment package are energy autonomy for the port over the next few years, the use of green energy, energy redundancy (more than one source of supply) and ensuring that the capacity and power of supply for industries associated with the port and for port operations will be guaranteed.
